Over-promise, under-deliver

Recently, I spoke with an experienced professional at a leading engineering company. With the responsibilities and job title he has, his current salary fell far short of what I expected for someone with his qualifications.


I asked why he managed to stay on and why is he exploring new opportunities. He confided that his manager's repeated unfulfilled promises led him to feel disengaged.

Like any business dealing, over-promise and under-delivery will allow short-term gain. After a while, when employees or team members see no sign of the promised "rainbow", be itĀ

they would start to look to other skies.


When leaders don't keep to their words, they are keeping quiet quitters. Employees will only do the minimum to pass the time. When the competitors or other opportunities come knocking at their door, all efforts to retain the talent will be in vain.
